For most of his adult life Peter Santenello ran a mobile detailing business, polishing other people's cars, boats and planes. He had opened a YouTube account in 2009 but only posted the odd clip. Around the age of forty he decided to make filming his job. As of 1 November 2026 his channel has 4.31 million subscribers, 425 videos and more than 886 million views, all shot on a GoPro with no presenter voiceover, and the header next to the Subscribe button has a second one: Join.
Peter was born in Burlington, Vermont, on 27 September 1977 and grew up in the small town of Panton. At 14 he had pen pals in the Soviet Union, and the letters made him curious about that part of the world. His family worked hard and rarely travelled. In a 2018 post on his own blog he wrote that he made his first sale at eight (a go-cart his friend's dad built) and at ten was doing landscaping for five neighbours. As an adult he tried a hangover remedy, wedding videography ("that was a nightmare!") and a social platform, and most of them failed. The one that lasted, for almost 18 years, was a detailing business in Lake Tahoe. In the early years he also worked nights in a restaurant to get by.
At 24 he saved about $20,000 for a seven-month trip around Europe. It turned into a two-year trip around the world, including a boat across the Black Sea from Istanbul to Odesa, his first visit to Ukraine. He has since been to more than 85 countries. In late 2016 he moved to Ukraine to make videos about everyday life there. He spent about six weeks with the Burkut family, who had fled the fighting in Avdiivka for a village in the Zaporizhzhia region, helping them sell corn and dig a well by hand. He put it all on YouTube as a series called Fish Out of Water. When he left he raised more than $2,300 from viewers so the family could have an indoor bathroom and running water. "I've always had a business, and I know how to make money," he told the Kyiv Post in 2018. "What I want to do is work at something I really enjoy, and that's filming."
From Ukraine he filmed in Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and other countries that usually only appear in the news for their politics. His method stayed simple: turn up with a GoPro, find locals who will talk, and let them explain their own lives without a voiceover. In 2019 he sold his detailing business. In 2020, after four years in Ukraine, COVID sent him and his wife, Natalia, back to the United States, and he turned the camera on America: Amish communities, Hasidic Brooklyn, Native American reservations, Appalachia, inner-city neighbourhoods and the US-Mexico border. Natalia edits the videos. The film pinned to the top of his channel, Poorest Region of America - What It Really Looks Like, has more than 37 million views. In August 2026 Simon & Schuster published his first book, Your Fellow Americans, and it became a New York Times bestseller.
Going full time on YouTube didn't pay straight away. In 2018 he wrote that his blog and YouTube videos "hardly bring in any money." Two years later he told Ami Magazine: "I'm getting enough money from ad revenue to almost keep me afloat, but it's not consistent. There are other ways to monetize it that I'm working on right now." Today one of those ways is the Peter Santenello Inner Circle, a paid membership linked from his channel. On 1 November 2026 it offered three monthly tiers: The Community ($10) with deeper-dive videos and never-shared travel stories, Free Thinker ($15) with Q&A videos and a merch discount, and Fellow Traveler ($25), which adds an autographed postcard from every series. Ad revenue goes up and down. Members who pay every month give him income he can plan around.
Peter didn't start with a crew, a network deal or a big audience. He started at forty with a GoPro and a lot of curiosity, and he kept filming people other channels skipped. You don't need 4 million subscribers for fans to pay for that. If people like your stories, a few dozen supporters paying a few dollars a month can cover your fuel, your flights or the next series.
You can set that up in minutes. On Yaff you can sell behind-the-scenes posts, photo dumps, extra videos and travel stories behind monthly tiers, take tips, and talk to supporters in group chats and DMs. Starter is free with a 5% platform fee, and payouts go to your bank daily via Stripe.
