How many of you would cross an ocean?

Or better question, what’s your version of crossing an ocean? The thing that scares you but you know you need to do?

I’d love to hearā¬‡ļø

Now, that's a deep subject for sure. I'm getting ready (literally) to cross an ocean. The unique aspect of your question comes from the word 'should'. To me, that's the most difficult part of the journey. At this point, I can answer 'yes' to should I cross, but the difficulty changes quickly after that. There's all of the logistics involved, and then relationships (leaving behind and making new), not to mention what will life be like on the other side. Maybe the actual crossing could be viewed as the most difficult, and I tend to think that way only for a while. Your videos are generally about that part, and then they morph into destination when you arrive. For me, I'm hung up on the journey only until I know that everything will be okay. Then I shift to destination. But, right now, after handling the 'should' part, I'm hyper-focused on down-sizing into world-traveler mode, and also managing the cost of the ocean crossing. This might get lost in my reply, but, Luke, I am curious how you manage the down-sizing into world-traveler mode part. I suppose that you have belongings in storage, but you also have to bring things with you. How do you decide how much to bring, what to bring, etc.? How much did you bring on this last trip? Was it enough? Did you bring too much? What did you learn about the decisions that you made regarding what to bring? Thanks.

You really have to think about an ocean crossing in steps. There’s no need to solve what life will look like afterward before you’ve even crossed. As for packing, I brought way too much on my first crossing. This time I packed much lighter, but still more than I needed. I mostly brought a week’s worth of clothes, 2 swimsuits, and water gear like my wetsuit, dive gear, and kite gear. I decide what makes the cut based on what I’ll realistically use every week, what would be difficult to replace, and whether it’s worth the space it takes up. My biggest lesson is to pack less than you think. You can usually buy any missing clothes later. I left the rest of my belongings at my parents’ house, and I’m also young enough that I haven’t accumulated too much yet, so I can't really speak on the downsizing part. When do you leave for your crossing?
